Court rules against gays on marriage

Court rules against gays on marriage: "SAN FRANCISCO A defeat for supporters of same-sex marriage. A California appeals court has ruled the state's marriage laws do not violate the constitutional rights of gays and lesbians."

For some reason this is a hot-button issue for many people. I still don't get it, myself. What's the big deal? What rational reason could there be to not let gays marry? As the article says, they already have domestic partners rights. What reason is there to deny them this one, last, insignificant step?
