I thought I'd seen everything when I read David Brooks saying out loud in a New York Times column that reporters should sit on damaging comments to save their sources from their own idiocy. But now we get CBS News Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan slamming our own Michael Hastings on CNN's "Reliable Sources" program, agreeing that the Rolling Stone reporter violated an "unspoken agreement" that journalists are not supposed to "embarrass [the troops] by reporting insults and banter."

Granted, this is from a Rolling Stone reporter. But it would seem, in my opinion, that the basics of what he is saying are dead on the mark. There's a difference between supporting the Military and elevating the military to the level of godhood. I have been involved with the Military for, well, almost all my life. I am very pro military on many, many fronts. But the idea that they can do no wrong is absurd. When someone makes a mistake or gets out of line they should be called to the carpet for it. Same with the Civilian government. It is the responsibility of every citizen to question the government, be it local, regional, national or military, whenever they do something questionable. It is our duty. It seems people, often those in the government, forget that they work for us. We,The People, are the bosses and they are the employees hired to do what we want them to do.

Now, I'm not a big fan of the news media. Actually, that's an understatement. But they should not be whitewashing reports and quotes just because it might be inconvenient. If this were a case of a reporter publishing something that was part of a strategic maneuver or some other military plan, then sitting on it would be right and proper. But when it is a case of people being to dumb to shut up... I wouldn't want a leader in Afghanistan who didn't have the sense to keep their mouths shut. Even if what he said was true.
